The "Pre-Order" Approach
Script: "I am very interested in your collection, but my current sell-through is 40 units/month. Would you be open to a 50-unit pre-order minimum? I will pay immediately and ship directly to my customers as they order."
The Buyer's Guide
Where Every Connection Finds Its Market.
The Basics
Minimum Order Quantities (MOQs) are the baseline production run required by a supplier to initiate manufacturing. Whether you are sourcing hand-blown glass, organic cotton t-shirts, or specialty soaps, suppliers face fixed costs in tooling, setup, and raw material preparation. The MOQ is the price they charge to cover these overheads and ensure a viable margin.
For independent buyers, the MOQ is the primary friction point in the supply chain. A product might be perfect for your store, but if the supplier requires a 500-unit minimum and your historical sales velocity only supports 50 units per month, you face a difficult choice: stock excess inventory, negotiate a lower MOQ, or walk away.
Understanding the mechanics of MOQ is not just about logistics; it is about brand integrity. Overstocking cheap goods can dilute your brand’s curated aesthetic. Understocking high-quality, unique items means missing out on sales. LinkFlux exists to help you bridge that gap.
To determine if an MOQ is sustainable, calculate your Sales Velocity (average units sold per month). Compare this against the supplier's MOQ.
Scenario A (Safe): You sell 40 units/month. Supplier MOQ is 100. Action: This is a risk. You would have 4 months of inventory on hand at once.
Scenario B (Viable): You sell 150 units/month. Supplier MOQ is 100. Action: This is safe. You can clear the initial batch in less than a month and restock as needed.
Negotiation Tactics
Script: "I am very interested in your collection, but my current sell-through is 40 units/month. Would you be open to a 50-unit pre-order minimum? I will pay immediately and ship directly to my customers as they order."
Script: "If you can drop the MOQ to 100 units for this first batch, I am willing to sign a contract for a 500-unit replenishment order in 6 months. This guarantees you volume without the risk of my inventory sitting on a shelf."
Script: "I want to proceed with the order, but I need to be certain about sizing and quality. Can you adjust the MOQ to 200 units so I can cover samples for my team and initial retail stock?"
When you cannot meet the MOQ for a single high-demand item, consider Mixed-SKU Orders. This involves combining different SKUs from the same supplier into one shipment to meet the total volume requirement.
Case-Pack Strategies: Always ask suppliers about case packs. A case pack is the supplier's standard retail unit (e.g., 12 pairs of socks in a box). By ordering full case packs, you may meet the MOQ faster than ordering individual units, but ensure the retail-ready packaging suits your brand's unboxing experience.

I found that asking for a "production slot" rather than a fixed quantity worked wonders. I told them I needed their slot for the next season, which secured the same MOQ but gave me more flexibility on payment terms.
